Trip overview
Perched on a sheer cliff about 900 meters above the Paro Valley, Tiger’s Nest Monastery (Paro Taktsang) is Bhutan’s most famous landmark and one of the Himalayas’ most spectacular sacred sites. According to legend, Guru Rinpoche flew to this spot on the back of a tigress in the 8th century and meditated in a cave here to subdue local demons. The temple complex was built around that cave in 1692 and remains a place of deep pilgrimage for Bhutanese Buddhists.
Our guided day hike takes you from the trailhead at about 2,600 meters to the monastery at roughly 3,120 meters. The trail climbs steadily through pine and rhododendron forest, decorated with fluttering prayer flags and prayer wheels. A teahouse cafeteria about halfway up is a welcome place to rest and enjoy your first clear view of the monastery clinging to the rock face. The round trip takes around 5 to 6 hours, depending on your pace and the time you spend at the top.
At the monastery, your guide will lead you through the temples and explain their art, history and spiritual meaning. Photography and mobile phones are not permitted inside the temples, so this is a chance to simply take in the atmosphere. After your visit, you walk back down the same trail, with the Paro Valley opening up below you, and return to your hotel for a well-earned rest.
Good to Know Before You Go

Dress code: Dress modestly for the temples, with shoulders and knees covered.

Tiger Nest Monastery Hike
Tiger’s Nest Hike from Paro – A Spiritual & Scenic Journey of a Lifetime
The Tiger’s Nest Monastery, locally known as Taktsang Monastery, is one of Bhutan’s most sacred and breathtaking landmarks. Perched dramatically on a cliffside at an altitude of 3,120 meters, it is not only a symbol of Bhutan’s spiritual heritage but also one of the most rewarding hiking experiences in the world. Starting the Journey from Paro
Your adventure begins with a scenic drive from your hotel in Paro to the Tiger’s Nest trailhead, located about 30 minutes away. The road winds gently through forests, quiet villages, and prayer flag-lined hillsides, setting the tone for the spiritual journey ahead. The Hike Experience
The hiking trail to Tiger’s Nest is well-marked and takes approximately 2–3 hours uphill, depending on your pace. The path begins with a gradual ascent through lush pine forests scented with juniper and rhododendron. Along the way, colorful prayer flags flutter in the wind and carved prayer wheels remind you of Bhutan’s deeply rooted Buddhist traditions.
Halfway up, hikers are rewarded with a stunning view of the monastery clinging to the cliff, seeming almost unreal in its beauty. A small café at this viewpoint offers a perfect break for tea, snacks, and photography before continuing the final ascent.Reaching the Sacred Monastery
The last stretch includes stone steps, bridges, and a gentle descent before the final climb to the monastery itself. Standing face-to-face with Tiger’s Nest feels surreal—majestic, peaceful, and awe-inspiring. Once inside, you’ll explore sacred temples, meditation caves, and ancient murals while learning about the legend of Guru Rinpoche, who meditated here and brought Buddhism to Bhutan.
