5-Day Bhutan Itinerary: What to Do Each Day
The following itinerary follows the Paro–Thimphu–Punakha–Paro route. Travel times are approximate and can vary with road conditions, traffic, weather, and sightseeing stops.
Day 1: Arrive in Paro and Drive to Thimphu
Your Bhutan trip begins when you arrive at Paro International Airport. Your guide will meet you at the airport, and you will continue by private vehicle to Thimphu, Bhutan's capital.
The drive usually takes around 1.5–2 hours, following a scenic river valley and mountain road. After checking into your hotel, you can rest or explore a little of the city if your flight arrives early enough.
Thimphu sits at approximately 2,320 metres above sea level. Take the first evening slowly, drink enough water, and give yourself time to adjust to the altitude. There is no need to fill the arrival day with activities, especially if you have travelled a long distance.
Overnight: Thimphu.
Day 2: Explore Thimphu and Drive to Punakha via Dochula Pass
Spend the morning exploring some of Thimphu's important cultural and religious landmarks.
The itinerary includes:
Tashichho Dzong: A prominent Bhutanese fortress and monastery that also serves as an important government centre.
National Memorial Chorten: A well-known religious monument where local people come to pray and walk around the chorten.
Folk Heritage Museum: A place to learn about traditional Bhutanese homes, household objects, and rural life.
After lunch at a local restaurant, leave Thimphu and drive towards Punakha. The journey takes approximately three hours, with a stop at Dochula Pass.
At around 3,100 metres, Dochula Pass is known for its 108 memorial chortens and panoramic Himalayan views on clear days. Weather conditions can affect visibility, so the mountain views are not guaranteed.
After crossing the pass, the road descends towards Punakha. The valley is at a lower elevation than Thimphu and generally feels warmer.
Overnight: Punakha.
Day 3: Visit Punakha Dzong and Return to Paro
Start the day with a visit to Punakha Dzong, one of Bhutan's most recognised architectural landmarks. It stands at the meeting point of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers and is known for its traditional Bhutanese design and riverside setting.
You can also walk across the nearby Punakha Suspension Bridge, which offers views of the river and surrounding valley.
After lunch, the journey back to Paro begins. The drive takes approximately five hours, depending on road conditions and stops.
Along the way, the itinerary includes a stop at Chimi Lhakhang, a temple associated with Drukpa Kunley, popularly known as the Divine Madman. The temple is connected with local stories and traditions that make it an interesting cultural stop.
By the time you reach Paro, you will have travelled through several different landscapes, from the warmer Punakha Valley to the higher mountain roads.
Overnight: Paro.
Day 4: Hike to Tiger Nest Monastery
The fourth day is dedicated to one of Bhutan's most famous attractions: Tiger’s Nest Monastery, also known as Paro Taktsang.
The monastery is built on a cliffside approximately 900 metres above the Paro Valley. The hike starts at around 2,600 metres and reaches approximately 3,120 metres.
The round trip generally takes around five to six hours, depending on your walking pace, weather, and time spent at the monastery. The route includes a steady uphill climb, forest paths, and a series of stone steps.
There is a cafeteria partway along the trail where hikers can rest and enjoy a view of the monastery. Ponies may be available for the initial uphill section, subject to local arrangements. They do not take visitors all the way to the monastery, and the remaining route still requires walking.
The second part of the hike includes many steps, so a reasonable level of fitness is helpful. Take breaks when needed rather than trying to complete the climb quickly.
You can read more about the Tiger Nest Monastery hike before your trip.
After returning to Paro, have lunch and rest. If you have enough time and energy, you may also visit Kyichu Lhakhang and Paro Rinpung Dzong. These visits depend on your hiking pace and the remaining daylight.
Overnight: Paro.
Day 5: Departure from Paro
After breakfast, your guide and driver will transfer you to Paro International Airport for your departure.
Your five-day journey ends here, after exploring Thimphu, Punakha and Paro, visiting important cultural sites and completing the Tiger’s Nest hike.

Best Time to Visit Bhutan for Five Days
Spring and autumn are popular seasons for a five-day Bhutan trip because of their generally favourable sightseeing and outdoor conditions.
Spring (March–May)
Spring brings warmer days, blooming rhododendrons and colourful landscapes. It is also a popular time for cultural events, including Paro Tshechu. Festival dates vary each year, so check the calendar before arranging your flights.
Autumn (September–November)
Autumn is known for clearer skies and good mountain views. Thimphu Tshechu is among the major cultural festivals during this season. It is also a busy travel period, so booking accommodation and flights early is sensible.
Winter (December–February)
Winter can be a good choice if you prefer quieter travel. Days can be sunny, but mornings and evenings are cold. Higher mountain areas and passes may experience snow.
Monsoon (June–August)
The monsoon season brings rainfall, cloudy conditions, and potentially slippery trails. Road journeys may also take longer during periods of heavy rain.
For a more detailed seasonal breakdown, see our guide to the best time to visit Bhutan.
Bhutan Visa and Entry Requirements
Most international visitors need to arrange a Bhutan tourist visa before travelling. Visa requirements and application procedures vary by nationality, so check the current rules before booking your flights.
The tourist visa application fee is US$40, separate from the Sustainable Development Fee. The passport validity requirement and other entry conditions should also be checked against the latest official guidance.
When you book with Relax Getaways, the package includes the Bhutan tourist visa fee and processing service. The company can assist with the visa arrangements as part of the trip.
